Omicron cases in Palestine surge to 242 with 116 new cases

The tally of the COVID Omicron cases in Palestine has surged to 242 after 116 more cases were registered in the recent few days, the Ministry of Health said today.

In a press statement, MoH spokesman Kamal Al-Shakhra said 116 more cases of the Omicron variant of COVID have been detected in the country, bringing up the tally to 242.

In a statement earlier this week, Al-Shakhra said the majority of cases of the highly transmissible variant were reported in the West Bank, and that only one case had been registered so far in Gaza.

The World Health Organization has warned that the Omicron variant was spreading significantly faster than the delta strain.

Yesterday, the head of WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned against describing the Omicron variant as “mild” amid a “tsunami of cases” overwhelming health systems across the world.
