Workshop on Climate-Smart Agriculture held in Sana’a

The General Authority for Agricultural Research and Extension (GRRS), in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organized a consultative workshop on climate-smart agriculture.

At the opening of the workshop, which was attended by about 16 participants and specialists in agricultural affairs from the Capital Municipality and the governorates, the Chairman of the Authority, Dr. Abdullah Al-Olufi, stressed the importance of the workshop to review the results and recommendations of the basic study and the prevailing situation in agricultural areas.

He pointed out that the workshop, which was organized within the framework of the program to support resilient livelihoods, food security and climate adaptation in Yemen, aimed to identify farmers’ perception of the phenomenon of climate change and the impact of these changes on agricultural production, both plant and animal.

For his part, the Vice President of the Authority, Dr. Abbad Al-Bail, reviewed the methodologies
of the workshop and the purpose of its establishment. He pointed out that the participants were introduced to the objectives and obstacles of agricultural production and how to transform those goals and restrictions into future interventions.

He pointed out that the outputs of the workshop focused on finding a common vision for the importance of applying the concept of climate-smart agriculture within the upcoming agricultural strategy and policy in the country.

Al-Bail considered the workshop one of the steps in implementing the basic study for climate-smart agriculture, and its convening comes after the end of the field survey process for the targeted areas in each of the governorates of “Hajjah, Hodeida, Al-Mahwit, Sa’ada”, and raising the priorities of the upcoming interventions in those areas.

The workshop, which was enriched by interventions and suggestions by the participants, concluded with a number of recommendations, most notably how to benefit from the results of the study in updating or working
on the climate change strategy, as well as the mechanism for implementing upcoming activities or interventions, as well as investing in the field of climate-smart agriculture.
