Lower House urges world action to stop Israeli attack on Jenin

The Lower House Monday called for urgent Arab and international action to stop Israel’s aggression against the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, and protect the Palestinian people, who are facing the Israeli war machine and destruction. “The crimes of the occupiers will not deter the Palestinian people from its struggle to regain its legitimate rights and establish an independent state on its national soil with Holy Jerusalem as its capital”, the House said in a statement, referring to an Israeli dawn raid against Jenin and the nearby Jenin refugee camp, in which at least five people were killed and dozens injured. “This aggression is a continuation of the occupation authority’s crimes and designs that were thwarted by the Palestinian people’s steadfastness and struggle”, added the statement. The terrorism perpetrated by the occupying power needs deterrence by the international community, it said, warning that the barbarism against the Palestinian people undermines all peace efforts, and proves to the entire world that Israel is an entity that upholds extremism, and practices all forms of punishment against unarmed Palestinians. The House said the international community’s silence on the crimes of the occupiers puts the world and humanity before a test, and requires all international forces to take urgent action to stop “this brutal aggression against the steadfast people of Jenin.”

WAFA correspondent said the occupation forces opened fire at al-Arabi TV reporter, Amid Shehadeh, and cameraman Rabi Munir, which set the camera and transmitter on fire. Shehadeh said the occupation forces directly targeted him and the cameraman with more than six bullets that hit the camera and the transmitter and damaged them. Five other journalists said they were trapped inside a house in the camp and that the Israeli forces are targeting them directly, urging the International Committee of the Red Cross to evacuate them from that house. Ministry of Information says Israeli army targeting of journalists in Jenin an attempt to hide the truth

The Ministry of Information said today that the Israeli targeting of journalists in Jenin and its camp is an attempt to hide the truth about its ongoing crime since dawn today, which has led to the death of eight people and the wounding of more than 50 others. It said in a statement that besieging media crews for more than two hours inside a house in the camp, shooting at journalists, and the seizure and detonation of a camera and a transmitter are part and parcel of this policy of concealing the occupation’s crimes. The Ministry called on the International Federation of Journalists and all organizations defending the freedom of opinion to provide urgent protection for the journalists and not to wait for the Israeli occupation forces to kill more Palestinian journalists, in reference to the army killing in May of last year of Al Jazeera correspondent in Palestine Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed while covering an Israeli army incursion into Jenin refugee camp.

Newspapers Review: Settler violence, the funeral of the prisoners’ minister highlight of dailies

The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted settler violence and vandalism in the West Bank as well as the funeral of Minister of Prisoners Affairs, Qadri Abu Bakr, who died in a car accident in the north of the West Bank. Al-Quds and al-Ayyam dailies said in the main front-page story headline that the settlers continued to attack Palestinians, vandalizing property and arson of fields and vehicles. The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, while also reporting on the settlers’ terrorism, highlighted the funeral; attended by President Mahmoud Abbas, of the late prisoners’ minister Qadri Abu Baker, who died in a car accident near Salfit. It also said that the Palestinian administrative detainees who were on hunger strike demanding an end to their incarceration without charge or trial have ended their strike after reaching a deal with the Israeli military for not renewing their detention after the current one expires. Al-Ayyam said the resistance in Jenin downed an Israel drone as the army talks about a large-scale operation in the city. It said in a story quoting Nabil Shaath, representative of President Abbas on international relations, saying that Spain is seriously considering recognizing the Palestinian state. It also said in another story that Washington links the visa waiver for Israelis to actions in the West Bank. It also quoted the UN commissioner on human rights saying that the list of companies working in the illegal Israeli settlements has been updated.
