Major Shake-Up in World’s Passport Power Ranking

LONDON, July 18, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Japan has been knocked off the top spot on the Henley Passport Index for the first time in five years and bumped into 3rd place, according to the latest ranking, which is based on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Singapore is now officially the most powerful passport in the world, with its citizens able to visit 192 destinations out of 227 around the world visa-free. Germany, Italy, and Spain all move up into 2nd place with visa-free access to 190 destinations, and Japanese passport holders join those of six other nations — Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden — in 3rd place with access to 189 destinations without a prior visa.

The UK appears to have finally turned the corner after a six-year decline, jumping up two places on the latest ranking to 4th place — a position it last held in 2017. The US, on the other hand, continues its now decade-long slide down the index, plummeting a further two places to 8th spot with access to just 184 destinations visa-free. Both the UK and the US jointly held 1st place on the index nearly 10 years ago in 2014, but have been on a downward trajectory ever since. Afghanistan remains entrenched at the bottom of the Henley Passport Index, with a visa-free access score of just 27, followed by Iraq (score of 29), and Syria (score of 30) — the three weakest passports in the world.

The general trend over the history of the 18-year-old ranking has been towards greater travel freedom, with the average number of destinations travelers are able to access visa-free nearly doubling from 58 in 2006 to 109 in 2023. However, the global mobility gap between those at the top and bottom of the index is now wider than it has ever been, with top-ranked Singapore able to access 165 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan.

Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, says only eight countries worldwide have less visa-free access today than they did a decade ago, while others have been more successful in securing greater travel freedom for their citizens. “The UAE has added an impressive 107 destinations to its visa-free score since 2013, resulting in a massive leap of 44 places in the ranking over the past 10 years from 56th to 12th position. Of the countries sitting in the Top 10, the US has seen the smallest increase in its score, securing just 12 additional destinations. Singapore, by comparison, has increased its score by 25, pushing it up five places over the past 10 years to number one.”

Commenting in the Henley Global Mobility Report 2023 Q3, released today alongside the latest index, Greg Lindsay from Cornell Tech’s Jacobs Institute, says that from a purely mechanical perspective, “the story is a simple one — by more or less standing still, the US has fallen behind. While its absolute score has in fact risen over the last decade, the US has been steadily overtaken by rivals such as South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. America’s relentless slide down the rankings is a warning to its neighbor Canada and the rest of the Anglosphere as well.”

The links between visa-free access and openness

Henley & Partners has conducted exclusive new research into the relationship between a country’s openness to foreigners — how many nations it allows to cross its borders visa-free — and its own citizens’ travel freedom. The new Henley Openness Index ranks all 199 countries worldwide according to the number of nationalities they permit entry to without a prior visa.

The Top 20 ‘most open’ countries are all small island nations or African states, except for Cambodia. There are 12 countries that are completely open to all passports and four that don’t allow anyone in visa-free. While the correlation between a high openness score and high visa-free access score is not straightforward, it is notable that Singapore and South Korea — high climbers on the Henley Passport Index Top 10 over last decade, moving up from 6th and 7th respectively in 2013 to 1st and 3rd today — boast relatively high degrees of openness compared to the 5 countries with the biggest disparity between the travel freedom they enjoy, versus the visa-free access they provide to other nationalities. US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan have all either slid down the ranking or remained in the same place as their openness stagnates.

Prof. Peter J. Spiro, who holds the Charles Weiner Chair in international law at Temple University, says America’s extension of visa-free access is low, even by the standard of developed economies. “EU states grant visa-free privileges to more than twice the number of states than does the US. Processing delays, high refusal rates, and a reputation for disagreeable customer service are tarnishing the attractiveness of the US as a destination. Add to that the growing reputation of the US as ridden with gun violence and one can project a long-term trajectory in which US global standing further erodes.”

Israeli forces deny Palestinian’s access to his town near Jenin

Israeli occupation forces today prevented a Palestinian citizen of Bart’a, a Palestinian town to the northwest of Jenin city, from entering it, under flimsy pretexts. Haitham Qabha, who owns a public vehicle, told WAFA that the occupation prevented him from passing into the town through the checkpoint set up at its entrance, under the pretext that he was carrying water boxes. The soldiers claimed that he got into a fight with one of them, he added. Qabha added that he spent the night in his vehicle at the checkpoint, waiting for the soldiers to allow him to enter the town, but the occupation still prevented him from doing so.

MAP providing bulletproof vests and helmets to PRCS teams amid recurrent attacks on health workers

Amid a serious rise in attacks on frontline health workers in the occupied West Bank this year, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) has agreed to supply bulletproof vests to Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) emergency medical teams as they continue to provide life-saving medical care to Palestinians impacted by escalating Israeli settler and military violence, according to a press statement. As the dire health and humanitarian situation in the West Bank continues to deteriorate, emergency medical responders seeking to reach and treat the sick and wounded continue to experience violent attacks and systematic obstruction in what an independent UN Commission of Inquiry described as ‘one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a healthcare worker,’ it added. Melanie Ward, MAP’s CEO, said: ‘We have taken this unprecedented step in response to an urgent call from Palestinian health workers for protection from the violence they face in the line of duty. Last week in Jenin, I heard for myself from PRCS paramedics why this equipment is so needed. No health worker should have to risk their life to save others, and so ensuring their safety is of paramount importance to ensuring that they can continue to provide unimpeded access to healthcare for Palestinians in need.’ MAP will provide the PRCS with 20 bulletproof vests and helmets, amounting to $24,000. This comes as part of its ongoing West Bank emergency response this year, which has so far included supplying essential medicines and equipment to hospitals and urgent care centers dealing with the influx of injuries, providing first aid kits to first responders and medical volunteers, and delivering trauma care training to medical staff and paramedics. The PRCS have reported that their medical teams experienced 193 separate violations in the first six months of 2023, marking a 310% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This includes physical assaults, targeting with live ammunition and other weapons by Israeli forces, and repeated obstruction while trying to reach and transport the wounded. Last year 105 paramedics were injured while on duty, including as a result of live ammunition and rubber-coated steel bullets. Ahmed Jibril, Head of the Emergency and Ambulance Department at PRCS in Nablus, said: ‘This generous support from MAP is a testament to their commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our healthcare workers. With the increasing risks faced by our teams, most recently seen in Jenin, these bulletproof vests and helmets will provide a crucial layer of protection, allowing our teams to continue saving lives and providing essential medical services in the face of adversity.’ During the Israeli military raid on Jenin refugee camp earlier this month, the protected status of health workers and facilities under international humanitarian law was again violated, and ambulance access to the wounded obstructed. In one incident, Israeli forces confiscated the keys of two ambulances and seized the mobile phones of a team who were trying to respond to an emergency call. In another, an ambulance going to pick up a pregnant woman in labor was obstructed while they tried to transport her to hospital. At the same time as emergency medical teams are under increasing threat, the need for their services has increased as a result of growing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. The killing of 12 Palestinians in an Israeli military raid on Jenin refugee camp last week has resulted in 2023 becoming the deadliest year in the West Bank since 2005, with at least 157 Palestinians killed overall, including 26 children, by Israeli soldiers and settlers. MAP is also calling for the international community to take urgent action to address attacks against Palestinian health workers, including by ensuring that violations of international law are met with meaningful accountability.

ICC to launch online platform for individuals to file complaints against Israeli perpetrators of war crimes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is expected to soon launch an online electronic platform that allows individuals to file complaints against Israeli perpetrators of war crimes. Omar Awadallah, Assistant Foreign Minister for United Nations and its Specialized Agencies, told Voice of Palestine radio that this platform, which will be launched today or tomorrow, will enable people to submit complaints online to the ICC supported by pictures and videos that show the crimes of the Israeli occupiers against them for the court to consider them and to take a stance against Israel. He pointed out that the Israeli government is continuing its racist policies, disregarding all international covenants that call for providing urgent protection for the Palestinian people. Awadallah stressed that there should be continuous interaction with the international community to force Israel to stop its daily crimes. B’Tselem spokesman Karim Jubran stressed the importance of documenting the crimes committed by the occupation forces with the International Criminal Court, despite its laxity in pursuing speedy accountability of war criminals in the occupying state. He called on people to submit to the Court their evidence and reports about war crimes committed by the occupation forces, stressing that these crimes do not fall under the statute of limitations. Shawan Jabarin, Director of Al-Haq, said that all admissions and complaints that are received from the people to be submitted to the ICC aim to put more pressure on the Office of the Public Prosecutor to force him to immediately consider and deal with them. He said that if the ICC does not consider the individual cases submitted to it, ‘we will demand the immediate closure of the Public Prosecutor’s Office to show our rejection of such irresponsible conduct.’ Jabarin said that there is a specific mechanism for receiving all reports and complaints from people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and then submitting them to the Office of the Public Prosecutor of the ICC.

Human Rights Ministry condemns execution by Saudi regime forces of three Yemeni youths in border area of Al-Raqou

The Ministry of Human Rights condemned the execution by the Saudi regime forces of three Yemeni youths in the border areas of Al-Raqou district, in Sa’ada province.

The ministry confirmed, in a statement, received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), that brutal and heinous crime is added to a long and continuous list of crimes systematically committed by the Saudi regime against Yemenis in the border directorates.

It called on the United Nations and international organizations to stop the policies of turning a blind eye to what the Saudi regime is committing against Yemenis at the border.

The ministry considered that continued disregard by the international community and the United Nations is what prompted and encouraged the Saudi regime to commit more crimes and massacres of collective and individual executions in cold blood, without caring about accountability, or even condemnation… calling for a firm and responsible international stance towards the continuation of Saudi crimes and violations.

WHO, UNICEF: Global Immunization Rates Show Sign of Post-Pandemic Rebound

New data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UN Childrens Fund UNICEF, reveal signs of immunization services rebounding in some countries, but coverage still falls short of pre-pandemic levels, particularly in low-income countries, putting children at grave risk of disease outbreaks.

Global immunization services reached four million more children in 2022, compared with the previous year as countries increase efforts meant to combat the historic backsliding in immunization triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data published by the UN agencies reveal that, in 2022, 20.5 million children failed to receive one or more diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP) vaccines, compared to 24.4 million children in 2021. DTP vaccinations are commonly used as the global indicator of immunization coverage.

Despite the improvement, this figure is still more than the 18.4 million children who failed to receive one or more vaccines in 2019, before pandemic-related disruptions to routine immunization services kicked in.

“These data are encouraging, and a tribute to those who have worked so hard to restore life-saving immunization services after two years of sustained decline in immunization coverage,” said WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“But global and regional averages dont tell the whole story and mask severe and persistent inequities. When countries and regions lag, children pay the price.” Of the 73 countries that recorded substantial declines in coverage, 15 have recovered to pre-pandemic levels, 24 are on the road to recovery and, most concerningly, 34 have stagnated or continued to decline, WHO Director-General said.

South Asia, which reported gradual increases in coverage in the decade prior to the pandemic, has demonstrated a more rapid and robust recovery than regions that suffered declines, such as Latin America and the Caribbean, Ghebreyesus added.

Last year, 21.9 million children – 2.7 million more than in 2019 – missed the routine measles vaccination in their first year of life, while an additional 13.3 million did not receive their second dose. This has placed children in under-vaccinated communities at heightened risk of outbreaks.
