India: Landslides kill 27, injure 50 others

The Indian authorities announced Sunday that the death toll from a landslide in Maharashtra in central western India rose to 27, while 50 people are still missing. According to France 24, the local official, Yogesh Mahasi, said, “We have counted 27 bodies so far, and between 50 and 60 people are still missing, but there are many problems in the rescue work at the site.” Mahasi said, “The small isolated village is about 5 kilometres from the nearest road, and no heavy equipment can reach this site, and we only have small machines. The bulk of the work is manual. The heavy rains that did not stop in the area made the rescue operation more difficult.” He added that he was not optimistic about the possibility of finding more survivors on the fourth day of the ongoing rescue operation. Local media reported that entire families had died.

Settlers throw furniture of Sub Laban family out of their home in Jerusalem

Two weeks after state-backed Israeli settlers forcibly evicted the Palestinian family of Sub Laban from their 70-year home in Aqabat al-Khaldia neighborhood in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israeli settlers this morning threw out the furniture of the Palestinian family out of their home to make sure they will not be able to return. Noura Sub Laban, the house owner, and activists who were standing in solidarity with her this morning outside her home were also evicted from the area by Israeli police and settlers. Israeli occupation forces also arrested Rafat Sub Laban, one of the inhabitants of the house, as they dispersed Noura and the rest of the activists from the vicinity of the house, now occupied by Israeli Jewish settlers. On July 11, Israeli settlers seized the family house of Sub Laban in the Old City in Jerusalem after breaking into it under the protection of Israeli forces and forcibly evacuated its owners. Several years ago, Israeli settlers seized an upper part of the building, while the house of the Sub Laban family remained in the middle of the building, which was surrounded by settlements on all sides. The family rented the house in 1953 from the Kingdom of Jordan, and was granted protected lease rights, but after the occupation of Jerusalem, it was placed under the management of the so-called Custodian of Absentee Properties, claiming that its ownership belonged to the Jews, which was categorically denied by the family. In 2016, the Israeli occupation courts prevented members of the Jerusalemite Sub Laban family, Raafat, Ahmed, his wife and children, and their sister, from living inside the house, which led to the dispersal of the family.

In addition, the campaign aims to enhance employers’ and workers’ compliance with legal standards stipulated in national legislation on heat stress prevention, provide information to stakeholders, including workers and employers, regarding the most effective means to comply with legal provisions related to heat stress prevention, learn about deficiencies and abuse that is not covered by the legal provisions in force, establish respect for workers’ rights that are recognized nationally and internationally in the State of Qatar, improve working conditions and the provision of a safe, healthy and sustainable environment that guarantees workers’ enjoyment of all components of occupational health and safety. Moreover, the awareness campaign also aims to highlight the repercussions of heat stress in the workplace on workers’ productivity and efficiency, emphasize that a safe, healthy, and sustainable work environment is what enhances productivity and development, highlight the role of heat stress in undermining workers’ right to life and their right to physical, mental, and psychological health, as well as the impact of heat stress on all workers, regardless of nationality, age or gender, in addition to strengthening the partnership based on the process of protecting the rights of expatriate workers and providing a safe, healthy and sustainable work environment, in implementation of the state’s national and international obligations in the field of human rights, and the development of best practices in partnership with stakeholders.

She indicated that the campaigns carried out by the NHRC over the past years have contributed to the realization of workers’ rights, and thus the involvement of workers and employers in efforts to prevent heat stress, all of which are steps that will enhance national efforts to reduce the risk of heat stress to workers and to design creative solutions to confront it from the stakeholders themselves, as they are the most capable of implementing prevention measures and taking the required and appropriate measures in the workplace.

Qatar Condemns in Strongest Terms Burning of Copy of Holy Qur’an in Denmark
