Nokia and Apple sign long-term patent license agreement

License covers Nokia’s (www.Nokia.com) fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies; Nokia to receive payments from Apple for a multi-year period.

ESPOO, FINGLAND – EQS Newswire – 4 July 2023 – Nokia announced it has signed a new patent cross-license agreement with Apple which will replace the current license that is due to expire at the end of 2023. The terms of the agreement remain confidential between the parties.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, said: “We are delighted to have concluded a long-term patent license agreement with Apple on an amicable basis. The agreement reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D, and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”

Nokia expects to recognize the revenue related to this new patent license agreement starting in January 2024. The agreement is consistent with the assumptions Nokia has disclosed in the commentary with respect to Nokia Technologies long-term outlook in its Financial Report for Q1 issued on April 20, 2023.

Nokia’s industry-leading patent portfolio is built on more than €140 billion invested in R&D since 2000 and is composed of around 20,000 patent families, including over 5,500 patent families declared essential to 5G. Nokia contributes its inventions to open standards in return for the right to license them on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Companies can license and use these technologies without the need to make their own substantial investments in the standards, fueling innovation and the development of new products and services for consumers.

Nexusguard Research Reveals Worldwide Distributed Denial of Service Attacks More Than Doubled in 2022

Nexusguard’s DDoS Statistical Report for 2022 Indicates Global Shift in Attack Landscape

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 4 July 2023 – In 2022, the total number of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks worldwide increased by 115.1% over the amount observed in 2021, according to new research from Nexusguard released in its DDoS Statistical Report for 2022. The data also showed that cyber attackers continued to alter their threat vectors by targeting the application platforms, online databases, and cloud-based storage systems within Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This resulted in a significantly greater impact globally as organizations continue to move more of their workloads to the cloud.

While the overall number of DDoS attacks did more than double, the maximum size of 361.9 gigabits per second (Gbps) represented a 48.2% decrease over those measured in 2021. Average attack size also shrank by 22.4%.

The majority of DDoS threats (85.6%) in 2022 were single-vector attacks, which is almost identical to the percentage seen in 2021. UDP- (user datagram protocol) based and TCP- (transmission control protocol) based attacks were the most popular attacks by type, accounting for 72.5% and 23.0% respectively. Other key findings include:

  • The top three DDoS attack vectors were NTP (network time protocol) amplification, memcached, and UDP attacks.
  • UDP based attacks increased 121.3% year-over-year (YoY). TCP based and other attacks also grew significantly.
  • Amplification attacks grew by 414.6% YoY.
  • Application attacks saw enormous growth, increasing by 718.1% YoY.

“Although DDoS attack size dropped in 2022, we saw a significant jump in the overall number of attacks, making the need for greater awareness and vigilance more essential today,” said Juniman Kasman, chief technology officer of Nexusguard. “Cyber attackers also continue to target critical infrastructure within ASN-level Communications Service Providers (CSPs), especially ISPs, which results in an incredibly far-reaching effect as the organizations relying on those providers are also negatively impacted.”

With DDoS activities on the rise in Latin America, Nexusguard will launch a new DDoS scrubbing center in São Paulo, Brazil in July. The new center will provide comprehensive protection for local network operators and enterprises against DDoS attacks, mitigating the growing threat of cyber attacks in the region. The scrubbing center will also power Nexusguard Bastions, a managed DDoS protection service designed for businesses dealing with the impacts triggered by cyber attacks or seeking to add advanced cybersecurity capabilities to their product portfolio.

Read Nexusguard’s DDoS Statistical Report for 2022 which provides comprehensive research around the shift in the global DDoS threat landscape. This annual report by Nexusguard examined the increases in DDoS attacks between 2021 and 2022, including single-target network layer attacks and multi-thread application attacks.

Reminiscing about the early days of FIRE Fit Abu Dhabi, co-owner Sandy Abou Samra said, “Looking back on a lot of our Fans’ first day at FIRE Fit, they were nervous, out of shape, couldn’t finish their first class and hated their bodies. One year on, they’ve become regulars, they’re in great shape, they’re super confident, and they guide and reassure newbies at the gym. They lift heavier than the trainers and feel great about their bodies… these Fans are the ones who can truly say that they’ve been ‘forged by FIRE.’ We’re really encouraged and inspired by their progress, and that’s what keeps us and our Rockstar trainers motivated to give our best every single day.”

In addition to FORCE, among the other FIRE Signature classes available at FIRE Fit Abu Dhabi are:

  • STRIKE: Fight club meets night club. It’s all the power of old school kickboxing, drilled and skilled in a high-energy, high intensity group atmosphere. So tick off that cardio workout and FIRE off that stress relief in just one 45-minute session. Each participant works on their own bag for the entire session with both bag data and heart rate performance feedback.

All the classes offer a supportive and safe environment for individuals of all fitness levels to improve their strength, stamina, and overall health. “One of the key elements that set FIRE FIT apart from other boutique fitness studios is the personalised care each Fan receives,” continued Sandy. “Every trainer makes sure to know each fan’s name, their goals, movement limitations, and injuries. This attention to detail has helped Fans achieve their goals safely and effectively while avoiding any potential injuries.”

Besides the physical benefits, FIRE Fit has also become a place to foster community and build friendships as regulars who have formed friendships in the gym now also meet outside of the gym for activities. This sense of community has created a supportive and motivating environment that keeps people coming back for more.

“We are thrilled with the success of FIRE FIT over the past year,” said FIRE Fit Abu Dhabi’s other co-owner, Hadeel Al Zabalawy. “Our goal was to create a fitness studio that was not only effective but also personalised and welcoming. Jenin: UN concerned over ongoing Israeli military operation

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern about the developments in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli airstrikes have hit the densely populated refugee camp there.

In a statement from his spokesperson on Monday, Mr. Guterres affirmed that all military operations must be conducted with full respect for international humanitarian law.

The incursion follows another operation in the camp on 19 June, which left four Palestinians killed and 91 others injured.

Rising death toll

The UN’s humanitarian affairs coordination office (OCHA) said on Tuesday that as a result of the air and ground operations taking place in the West Bank town, 10 Palestinians including three children were killed, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

At least 100 others have been injured, of whom 20 are reportedly in critical condition, OCHA said. Thousands of residents have reportedly left the camp since the operation began.

In an apparent retaliatory attack in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Tuesday, seven people were injured, three seriously, when a Palestinian man drove into pedestrians standing outside a shopping centre, according to news reports.

The attacker was shot and killed by an Israeli citizen at the scene. Palestinian militant group Hamas reportedly described the attack as a direct response to the military operation in Jenin.

Lack of basic essentials

Airstrikes in Jenin “significantly damaged” structures in which people were living in both the camp and surrounding neighbourhoods. The agency warned that due to damage to infrastructure, most of the Jenin camp has lost access to drinking water and electricity.

The UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA), which runs four schools, one health centre and other facilities in the Jenin camp, said that many residents were in urgent need of food, drinking water and milk powder for children.

As of Monday, all UNRWA installations in the camp, operated by 90 staff members, were out of service due to the heavy exchanges of fire, the agency reported.

Ambulances denied access

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that the extent of people’s injuries was placing strain on the “fragile and underfunded” health system and that it was working with partners to deliver more life-saving medical supplies to Jenin Hospital.

UN humanitarians said that the destruction of roads in the refugee camp was restricting access for medical teams and ambulances, and Israeli forces were conducting checks on vehicles, including ambulances, at the entrance of the camp.

According to the UN health agency, ambulances with medical teams have been prevented from entering parts of the refugee camp and reaching persons who have been critically injured.

Attacks on healthcare

At least two hospitals have also been affected by attacks involving use of ammunition and gas canisters.

“Attacks against healthcare, including prevention of access to persons injured, are extremely concerning”, WHO said, calling for “respect and protection of healthcare”, including safe passage to health services in Jenin and across Palestine.

The agency recalled that there had been a “significant increase” in attacks on healthcare in the West Bank this year. The first five months of 2023 saw “at least” 124 WHO-documented attacks, resulting in 39 health worker injuries and affecting 117 ambulances.

Killing must stop urges UN rights chief

The UN human rights chief Volker Türk said in a statement released later on Tuesday that the extensive Jenin operation and car ramming attack in Tel Aviv showed “violence only begets more violence.”

“The killing, maiming and the destruction of property must stop.”

He said the scale of the Israeli operation “raised a host of serious issues” regarding international human rights standards.

Some of the methods and weapons used by Israeli forces “are more generally associated with the conduct of hostilities in armed conflict, rather than law enforcement.”

He said in the context of the occupation, deaths resulting from such airstrikes “may also amount to wilful killings”.

“International human rights law sets clear obligations on Israel, as the occupying power, to ensure that all operations are planned and controlled so as to minimize, to the greatest extent possible, resort to force and in particular lethal force”, the High Commissioner said.

Israel is also obliged to ensure timely access to medical care to all those injured during the violence, he added.

Tel Aviv: Seven injured in Palestinian car-ramming and stabbing attack

A police spokesperson said the “terrorist” rammed into pedestrians and then tried to stab them with a sharp object. He was shot dead by a civilian.

Three of the injured were in a serious condition, the spokesperson added.

The attacker has been identified as a Palestinian from the occupied West Bank who was a known Hamas activist.

The Palestinian militant group praised the attack, saying it was a “natural response” to the ongoing major Israeli military operation in Jenin refugee camp, in the northern West Bank.

At least 10 Palestinians are said to have been killed since hundreds of Israeli troops, backed by drone strikes, entered the camp on Monday morning, triggering intense gun battles with militants inside.

The Israeli military said that while it was “operating to maintain stability in the Jenin camp by targeting the terrorist infrastructure, our civilians are consequently being targeted by terrorism”.

CCTV footage from the scene of the attack in Tel Aviv shows pedestrians and customers of a cafe running for cover as a pick-up truck hits a bus stop on Pinchas Rosen Street.

The driver is seen climbing out of the vehicle’s window and running runs towards a man standing near the cafe, who he appears to stab several times. He then chases after other people on the pavement.

A second video appears to shows another man wearing a motorcycle helmet shooting the attacker several times with a pistol as he lies on the ground.

The Israeli police spokesperson said three of the victims were in a serious condition, two were in a moderate condition and two were in a mild condition.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it had treated a 47-year-old woman who was in a serious condition, with multiple systemic injuries.

“I would like to praise the activity of the citizen with a lot of courage, that he was able to thwart the attack and prevent the continuation of that terrorist’s killing spree,” Israel Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai told reporters at the scene, according to the Jerusalem Post newspaper.

He also said investigations were still being carried out into the attacker.

The Shin Bet security service said he was a Palestinian from the southern West Bank village of Samu who did not have “a previous security background” and who did not have a permit to enter Israel.

Since the start of the year, more than 140 Palestinians – both militants and civilians – have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, while another 36 have been killed in the Gaza Strip.

Twenty-four Israelis, two foreigners and a Palestinian worker have been killed in attacks or apparent attacks by Palestinians in Israel and the West Bank over the same period. All were civilians except one off-duty serving soldier and a member of the Israeli security forces.

UNRWA deeply concerned by Israel’s military assault in Jenin refugee camp, damage to infrastructure

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said it is deeply concerned by the impact of the ongoing Israeli army military assault in the densely populated Jenin refugee camp and the damage caused to the infrastructure.

It said five Palestine refugees were among the 10 killed in the Israeli assault that started yesterday.

In addition, extensive damage to the camp infrastructure was reported, including damage to its water network. Water and electricity services have been interrupted in large areas of the camp, said UNRWA, as many people are in urgent need of food, drinking water and milk powder for children.

UNRWA runs 10 installations, operated by 90 Agency staff members in Jenin camp. All UNRWA installations, including four schools and one health center, were unable to operate due to the large-scale military assault.

UNRWA said it cannot yet confirm if any of its installations were affected, nor can the Agency confirm the final number of casualties among Palestine refugees in Jenin camp, urging action to ensure those injured have access to medical care.

A general strike is observed in the West Bank in protest against Israel’s assault on Jenin

A general strike is observed today in the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, in protest against the Israeli occupation army incursion into the northern West Bank city of Jenin and the killing of 10 people since yesterday.

Shops were shuttered and life came to a standstill in most areas of the West Bank as calls were made for people to take part in protests and demonstrations in support of Jenin and to confront soldiers at contact points.

Last night and early this morning, confrontations were reported with soldiers in several areas of the West Bank.

In Jericho, one person was injured after he was shot in the leg during confrontations with soldiers in Jericho.

A protest march was reported last night in Deheishe refugee camp in Bethlehem.

Confrontations broke out last night at the northern entrance to Ramallah during which soldiers fired tear gas canisters at the protesters causing suffocation cases.

Shots were fired at soldiers stationed at Qalandia checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah. No one was hurt, but the checkpoint was closed for a while.

Protests were also reported in several neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, soldiers closed the metal gate on a road that links Jalazon refugee camp to Ramallah and prevented people from using that road, forcing them to take alternate and longer routes to reach their destinations in Ramallah.

Soldiers also closed with earth mounds the entrance to the town of Beita in the north of the West Bank as residents confronted the soldiers who fired tear gas at them causing suffocation cases.

More protests and confrontations with soldiers are expected today as the Israeli army incursion into Jenin continues at full force for the second day.

Kuwait joins other countries in condemning Israeli aggression in occupied Jenin

Kuwait condemned Tuesday the Israeli military campaign against Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry stated Kuwait’s “categorical rejection of this blatant escalation and the continuous attacks carried out by the occupation forces against the brotherly Palestinian people.”

The Foreign Ministry said the military campaign in Jenin is a “new series” of Israeli violations of international humanitarian law and international covenants.

It called for an international community and a Security Council intervention stemming from their political, legal and humanitarian responsibilities.

In turn, World Health Organisation (WHO) expressed concern about the scope of the Israeli aggression in Jenin, adding that there are restrictions on supplying Jenin with medical services.

Doctors Without Borders stated that Israeli military bulldozers destroyed roads leading to the refugee camp, making it nearly impossible for ambulances to reach the injured.

Palestinian paramedics had to move on foot in an area of shooting and strikes by drones, according to the statement.
