The Government of St Kitts and Nevis celebrates a year in office with key accomplishments

Basseterre, Aug. 23, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, addressed the nation recently on St Kitts and Nevis’ Labour Party’s (SKNLP) one-year anniversary and outlined some of the Party’s successes in that period.

After Honourable Dr. Drew consulted with experts during the pandemic, he made the bold decision to lift Covid-19 restrictions. This decision supported the survival of the tourism sector.

Honourable Dr. Drew, shared on social media his gratitude for the support the government received from local citizens and noted the country’s latest developments, he outlined SKNLP administration’s critical achievements from August 2022 to August 2023, which include:

Growth in the education sector

The government has significantly reduced student loan interest rates from nine per cent to five per cent at the Development Bank. And student loans received interest-free debt relief for the first time in a little over four years.

The government implemented a ‘Graduate Finance’ Project with ECD$15,000 credit for students with loans at the Development Bank and other banks. With an additional ECD$25,000 grant for students applying and studying relevant undergraduate or graduate programmes.

Sports and recreation 

St Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Sports, under the leadership of Samal Duggins, has launched numerous initiatives as part of the government’s achievements, such as:

  • Transforming Lambert’s playing field to be used to attract more citizens to partake in sports activities on the field.
  • Restoration project in the Warner Park Cricket Stadium to host international games and support the growing tourism sector in the country.

Economic growth 

Indigenous financial institutions in the country now provide zero down payment for mortgages, which makes it possible for homeowners to qualify to purchase their dream home on the twin island nation.

The government-subsidised Fuel Variation Charge (FVC), and the cost of fuel and electricity subsided to ECD$9 million per month.

The first Citizenship by Investment (CBI) dividends were paid out to CBI investors in December 2022 and in June 2023, indicating that the St Kitts and Nevis CBI Programme has shown strength in economic development.

During the first year of the new SKNLP administration in office, the government received the highest tax collection through inland revenue, despite no tax increases and new taxes. Small businesses in the country impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic received ECD$20,000 Small Business Loans from the Development Bank.

The government was able to reinstate its Gratuity payouts for retired Government Auxiliary Employees (CAE) with a minimum of 10 years of service.

Growth in the tourism sector 

The government increased the number of different airlines to the destination with Caribbean Airlines, InterCaribbean Airlines and JetBlue Airlines to the country’s airlift. The “Venture Deeper” tourism brand campaign was launched to diversify tourism initiatives.

Honourable Dr. Drew and his administration welcomed the world’s largest cruise liner, Wonder of the Seas, to its port. Additional, extended discounted value-added tax days to three times a year – in Easter, Summer and Christmas festive seasons. And duty-free import of food up to 400lbs, including a duty-free allowance of US$200 for travellers and non-commercial importers.

Changes in the country’s legislation

The Government of St Kitts and Nevis improved its good governance by implementing changes to laws being passed to support and protect the country’s diverse communities, which include:

  • A Domestic Violence Act to protect women, men and children who are exposed to and affected by domestic violence.
  • Alterations were made to the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank legislation, and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Agreement Act was created for the country to access ECD$1.5 billion of capital to develop projects in electricity and energy, water and various other sectors.

Housing project launched 

The government commitment is to build 2,400 affordable hurricane-resilient smart homes in four years that will be built in four phases. Each phase will construct 600 homes, with features for each new homeowner to enjoy, including a water tank and a rooftop water heater in each home.

Growth in the healthcare sector 

Honourable Dr. Drew added that there are healthcare initiatives to provide essential healthcare to disadvantaged children through paying for emergency overseas medical care. This initiative saved over thirty sick children in the twin federation.

The above accomplishments were achieved by critical steps to preserve the economy and tourism sector. St Kitts and Nevis’ economy ricocheted in the last year with significant growth in the agriculture, financial services, and tourism sectors. Italian Government, UNESCO to support local communities in World Heritage sites of Petra, Wadi Rum

Italian Government and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Wednesday signed a 1.5 million Euro partnership agreement for a new initiative in Petra and Wadi Rum. The agreement aims to safeguard cultural heritage and support local communities in engaging “more effectively” in the protection of the World Heritage sites, through sustainable practices and alternative livelihood opportunities, according to a joint statement. This additional contribution to a long-standing partnership between Government of Italy and UNESCO in Jordan was cemented in the signing ceremony held Wednesday at the UNESCO Jordan Office premises, in presence of Italian Ambassador to Jordan, Luciano Pezzotti, UNESCO Representative in Jordan, Min Jeong Kim, and representatives from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). Speaking at the signing ceremony, UNESCO Representative, Min Jeong Kim, thanked Government of Italy for its “generous” support, adding that : “UNESCO will work closely with the Government of Jordan, as well as the local authorities and communities, to focus on activities that could help alleviate some of the pressures on the sites due to the exponential increase in the number of tourists in recent years.” Continuing: “The ultimate goal of the project is to support the sustainable preservation and development of the World Heritage sites for future generations.” The two-year initiative entitled “Local Communities and Sustainable Tourism in Petra and Wadi Rum” will contribute to the sustainable protection of the two World Heritage sites, while focusing on empowering local communities to play an active role in the preservation of these invaluable places and creating livelihoods opportunities, especially for the women and youth. Injaz seeks to network more than 55 startups with investment opportunities

Information and Communication Technology Association of Jordan (Injaz) Business Incubator organized an event to network startups with a group of institutions supporting the Kingdom’s entrepreneurship system, as part of the partnership that brings together the incubator with Innovative Startups and SMEs Fund (ISSF) and International Rescue Committee (IRC). In a statement Wednesday, Injaz said this event provided an opportunity for startups to communicate “constructively” by presenting their startups’ ideas to investors and service providers, aimed to building future relationships with the Kingdom’s private sector. More than 55 startups, representing various sectors, primarily in education technology, environment, information technology, aquaculture and other sectors, took part in the activity, the statement said. Additionally, more than 15 service providers from the banking, marketing services, education and the financing sectors participated in the event, Injaz announced. Injaz Business Incubator provided an ad hoc program for the startups development to improve their readiness to grow and verify capability of their companies to compete and sell their products and services to achieve a financial return. Services were provided by “highly qualified” mentors and trainers, the statement pointed out.

A decrease in registered exports and imports of goods in June – PCBS

Exports decreased in June by 8% compared to May, and also decreased by 1% compared to June 2022 and reached $130.6 million, today said the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS). Exports to Israel decreased in June by 3% compared to May and it represented 93% of total June exports, said the PCBS. At the same time, exports to other countries decreased by 46% during the same period and reached $8.9 million. Imports also decreased in June by 6% compared to May, while it increased by 4% compared to June 2022 and reached $678 million, said the PCBS. Imports from Israel decreased by 6% in June compared to May and it represented 54% of total June imports. At the same time, imports from other countries decreased by 5% compared to May 2023. The trade balance, which represents the difference between exports and imports, showed a decrease in trade deficit by 5% in June compared to May, while it increased by 5% compared to June 2022 and reached $547.4 million.

Agricultural road bulldozed by Israeli forces and closed with earth mounds in north of West Bank

The Israeli occupation forces today bulldozed an agricultural road in the community of Imriha – Khirbet al-Mukhal, in the town of Ya’bad, southwest of the northern West Bank city of Jenin, and closed it with earth mounds, according to the municipality of Ya`bad. It said in a statement that the military bulldozers, under the protection of the occupation forces, bulldozed sections of an agricultural road and closed it with earth mounds and rocks over a length of more than 550 meters. It said the road that was destroyed was 1.5 km long and served more than 35 families and 600 dunums of land planted with trees and crops.

Parliament discusses report of Local Authority Committee

Parliament discussed in its session held on Wednesday chaired by Speaker Yahya al-Ra’i the report of the Local Authority Committee regarding evaluating the level of collection of local, joint and public financial resources during the first half of the year 1444 AH at the level of administrative units in the capital’s Sana’a and the provinces.

The Parliament approved addressing the head of the National Salvation Government to oblige the Ministries of Finance, Local Administration, and Public Works and Roads to implement a number of recommendations.

In the session, members of the Parliament heard from Minister of State for Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Ali Abu Haliqa, the government’s message regarding completing the constitutional procedures for issuing the National Petroleum Companies Law, which was included in the national vision projects of the Ministry of Oil and Minerals.

The Parliament also heard from Minister of Oil and Minerals Ahmed Daris the explanatory memorandum regarding the aforementioned draft law, and approved its referral, along with his explanatory memorandum, to a specialized committee to take the necessary constitutional measures.

In addition, the Parliament reviewed the report of the Services Committee regarding the results of failing to complete Wadi Surdud -al-Kadan bridge project in al-Dhahi district in Hodeida province in light of the question of Council member Ali Baghawi Bald, who was referred to the committee.

The Parliament has postponed its discussion of the report to the next session.

Starting World Cup picking wedges in South Africa with Yemeni participation

The World Cup peg-picking competitions will be organized tomorrow, Thursday, by the International Federation of the game will start in George, South Africa, and will continue until next Sunday.

Nine teams, along with Yemen, will participate in the World Cup: Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India, Norway and South Africa (the host).

The technical meeting of the participating teams was held today,Wednesday, in the presence of the President of the International Picketing Federation, Muhammad bin Issa Al-Fayrouz, representatives of the participating countries, and the Referees and Organizing Committees, to discuss the list of competitions and the championship system, followed by conducting a veterinary examination on the horses and drawing the lottery for entering the teams and horses.

The national team delegation, headed by Assistant Undersecretary of the Sports Sector at the Ministry of Youth, Kamal Al-Sharif, includes the knights Bilal Al-Sabri, Abdullah Al-Maghrabi, Osama Al-Hamzi, Bilal Al-Safani, Abdulaziz Omar, and the national coach, Jamal Al-Taweel.

Maqbouli, Mutlaq, and Abbad inspect water implementation and sanitation projects in capital Sana’a

The Deputy Prime Minister for Services and Development Affairs, Dr. Hussein Maqbouli, the Minister of Works, Ghaleb Mutlaq, and the Mayor of the Capital, Dr. Hammoud Abbad, inspected today the progress of implementing a project to connect a water network in Al-Marawn neighborhood in Sawan region, at a cost of $250,000.

They were briefed on the components of the project, which includes the connection of main and secondary water network lines, and the installation of 15,000-meter household connections in Al-Majd neighborhood in Al-Marawan neighborhood, which is being implemented by the Municipal Corporation for Water and Sanitation under the supervision of the Works Sector.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Mayor of the Capital, along with the Chairman of the Social Affairs Committee in the Municipality, Hammoud Al-Naqeeb, also inspected the sanitation project for Al-Mutlaa’a neighborhood in Shu’ub, the first phase, at a cost of 192 million riyals, with a community contribution, with an completion rate of 85 percent.

The Deputy Prime Minister for Services and Development Affairs confirmed that the visit comes in implementation of the directives of the Revolutionary Leadership and the Supreme Political Council to see the level of implementation of service and development projects in the capital.

For his part, Capital’s Mayor stressed the keenness to provide and improve services to citizens in the various directorates of the Municipality, pointing out that these projects are a fundamental pillar of the construction and development process in accordance with the directives of the leadership.

Palestinian fisherman wounded by Israeli bullets in Gaza Sea

A Palestinian fisherman was wounded by Israeli Navy bullets while fishing at sea in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, the Palestinian fishermen union said that Mohammad Baker was wounded by Israeli rubber bullet while he was working in the middle of the sea in northern Gaza.

The occupation navy pursues more than 4,500 Palestinian fishermen on a daily basis to prevent them from crossing limited distances ranging from six to 12 nautical miles.

It carries out arrests of fishermen and confiscation of boats, from time to time, even though they do not exceed the permitted distances.

Kuwait Fire Force: fire in cement factory under control

Kuwait fire Force (KFF) announced Wednesday that six teams were able to put off a fire that broke out in a cement and manufacturing paint factory in Shuaiba Industrial area.

A report was received at the Central Operations Department midday stating that a fire broke out in a factory which contains flammable chemicals, The Public Relations and Media Department said in a statement.

The fire extended to a nearby factory but was quickly contained and seized in one location preventing it from spreading after six firefighting teams reached the location in a record time.

The operation was monitored by head of the General Fire Force, Lieutenant General Khaled Al- Mekrad and deputy head of the force for the control sector, Major General Jamal Nasser, the statement added.

The KFF called upon factory owners and tenants in industrial areas to abide by safety rules and regulations to avoid any such future incidents.
