Hanushek, 2021 Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate, and Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution of Stanford University, stressed the critical role of teachers in enriching education quality. The distinguished panel of economists called for more support for the teachers tackling knowledge gaps in children.

She was joined by Professor Esther Duflo and Professor Abhijit Banerjee, 2019 Nobel Prize Laureates in Economics, to discuss how to implement meaningful changes in education—from developing scalable, effective solutions, to adapting the curriculum to every child’s level.

CGTN: Democracy, shared human values: Forum on democracy opens in Beijing

BEIJING, Dec. 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Democracy is a shared human value, not the patented purview of a self-appointed few, the “International Forum on Democracy: The Shared Human Values” emphasized on Saturday.

In the keynote speech, Huang Kunming, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, shared four thoughts regarding the CPC’s propositions on democracy.

Third, the minister highlighted that China’s whole-process people’s democracy is a great creation of China’s democracy.

China’s socialist democracy is the broadest, most genuine, and most effective democracy that incorporates a combination of processes, including elections, consultations, decision-making, management and oversight.

China’s whole-process people’s democracy integrates process-oriented democracy with results-oriented democracy, procedural democracy with substantive democracy, direct democracy with indirect democracy, and people’s democracy with the will of the state, Huang said.

Fourth, Huang said that whether a country is democratic or not, its people are those most suited to answer the question. It is inappropriate for one country to judge another country’s democratic practices.

Shen Haixiong, president of the China Media Group (CMG), echoed Huang’s words. He praised the efficiency and fairness of China’s democracy and declared that American democracy is “seriously sick.”

According to Shen, the U.S. imposing its democracy on other countries regardless of their cultural and historical differences has brought economic disruption and humanitarian disaster to the local populations.

During the meeting, President Abbas briefed his Algerian counterpart on the latest political developments of the Palestinian cause and the Israeli occupation practices that undermine the chances of peace and the two-state solution.

President Abbas said that the Palestinian cause is going through unprecedented challenges in light of the intransigence of the Israeli government and its president’s declaration that he does not believe in the two-state solution, and his quest to deepen settlement, occupation, and apartheid, stifle the Palestinian economy and steal Palestinian, lands, natural and financial resources.

The president valued Algeria’s supportive stances of the cause and the Palestinian people in all international forums, especially in the African Union, wishing Algeria and its people continued progress and prosperity.

President Abbas as well discussed with President Tebboune ways to strengthen the distinguished relations, the historical bonds of friendship between the two peoples and the two leaderships, and many international and regional issues of common interest.

The two presidents discussed ways to coordinate common positions between the two sides, within the framework of preparations for the upcoming Arab Summit, which Algeria will host next March.

The President expressed his confidence that the Palestinian issue will be central to the upcoming Arab summit in Algeria.

During a joint press conference after the meeting, President Abbas stressed the necessity of holding an international peace conference in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy, aimed at ending the occupation of the land of the State of Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital.

He affirmed that if the occupation authorities continue their tyranny and aggressive practices against our people and our land with its capital, Jerusalem, “we will have our options and measures soon.” President Abbas thanked his Algerian counterpart and the Algerian diplomacy for the great role they play in supporting the Palestinian cause in international forums, especially in the African Union, and the importance of continuing bilateral coordination between the two countries.

President Abbas arrived in the Algerian capital on Sunday for a three-day official visit.

Palestinian teen killed by Israeli gunfire near Tulkarm

Israeli forces Monday overnight shot and killed a Palestinian teen at the military checkpoint of Jubara, south of the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarm.

The Palestinian Liaison Service confirmed that 15-year-old Mohammad Nidal Younes, a resident of Nablus city, succumbed to his critical wounds he sustained after being shot by Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint.

Israeli soldiers opened fire at Younes’ vehicle as he was driving at the checkpoint, critically injuring him purportedly for attempting to ram his vehicle into a number of soldiers.

Israeli media claimed that Younes allegedly rammed his car into another vehicle that was going through the checkpoint, hitting and seriously injuring a soldier.

The circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear and largely based on the Israeli version of events.

Israeli has been criticized for its reflexive use of lethal force and “extrajudicial killings” against Palestinians. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that circumstances surrounding such killings over the past months remain disputed.

Various international, Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations have slammed Israel’s policy of “extrajudicial killings” against Palestinians.

Video footages for similar alleged attacks appear to disapprove Israeli military claims, showing alleged Palestinian attackers did not even attempt to carry out any attacks. Some footage showed Israeli forces manipulating the crime scene following such killings.

11-year-old among nine Palestinians detained from West Bank

Israeli forces Monday overnight detained at least nine Palestinians, including an 11-year-old boy, from various parts of the West Bank, according to local and security sources.

They said that Israeli forces rounded up three Palestinians, including a former prisoner and a university student, from Silwad town, north of Ramallah city.

They also detained another after breaking into and ransacking his house in Burqa town, north of the city.

The soldiers conducted large-scale search campaign in Ni‘lin, Deir Qaddis, Kharbatha Bani Harith and Bil‘in, a cluster of towns located to the West of Ramallah, where they forcibly entered and ransacked a number of houses, turning them upside down.

In Jerusalem, heavily-armed police and intelligence officers barged their way into al-Issawiya, a neighborhood of some 20,000 residents are constantly harassed by the Israeli police and anyone, including children, run the risk of arbitrary arrest, where they thoroughly searched a number of houses and rounded up four others, including an 11-year-old boy.

In Hebron district, the sources confirmed a similar military raid in Dura town, southwest of the city, resulting in the detention of another.

Israeli forces frequently raid Palestinian houses almost on a daily basis across the West Bank on the pretext of searching for “wanted” Palestinians, triggering clashes with residents.

These raids, which take place also in areas under the full control of the Palestinian Authority, are conducted with no need for a search warrant, whenever and wherever the military chooses in keeping with its sweeping arbitrary powers.

Under Israeli military law army commanders have full executive, legislative and judicial authority over 3 million Palestinians living in the West Bank. Palestinians have no say in how this authority is exercised.

Israeli forces demolish home near Hebron

Israeli forces Monday demolished a residential home to the east of Yatta, south of the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, according to local sources.

Fouad al-Amour, an activist, told WAFA that the forces demolished a residential structure in the village of Erfa’ya, to the east of Yatta, owned by local resident Abu Salah al-Ja’abari.

To be noted, the village residents are frequently subjected to Israeli forces’ assaults in order to force them to leave their lands in favor of settlers.

Meanwhile, the Israeli forces installed a concrete structure in Palestinian-owned lands, adjacent to bypass road No. 60, at the entrance to Al-Fawwar refugee camp, south of Hebron.

Palestinian family forced to self-demolish its home in Jerusalem

A Palestinian family from the occupied Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan embarked today on demolishing its home after it was forced to do so by the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem.

The owner of the house, Bahaa Zaytoon, said he was forced to demolish the second floor of the house which was built four years ago to avoid paying exorbitant costs if the municipality carries out the demolition on its own. The demolition decision cited unpermitted construction as a pretext.

The demolition of the house will leave Zaytoon and his family of six homeless.

Using the pretext of building without a permit, which is rarely granted to Palestinians in the occupied city, the Israeli municipality has condemned hundreds of Palestinian-owned houses as part of a policy aimed to restrict Palestinian expansion and number in occupied Jerusalem.

At the same time, the municipality and government build tens of thousands of housing units in illegal settlements in East Jerusalem for Jews with a goal to offset the demographic balance in favor of the Jewish settlers in the occupied city.

Palestine records 402 new Covid-19 cases, five deaths

Palestine today recorded 402 new Covid-19 cases and five deaths, according to Health Minister Mai Alkaila.

She announced that 402 Palestinians tested positive for the highly contagious virus and five others died of it in the occupied territories.

As part of the 402 new cases, 251 cases were registered in the West Bank and 151 others in the Gaza Strip.

She identified the death cases as a resident of the Gaza Strip and four others of the West Bank district of Hebron.

She added that 191 Covid-19 patients recovered; 91 recovery cases in the West Bank and 100 others in the Gaza Strip.

She pointed that 50 Covid-19 patients are getting treatment in intensive care units and 84 others are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, including seven who are on ventilators.

She said that the recovery rate in Palestine has so far reached 98.2 percent and the active cases account for 0.8 percent. The death toll stood at 1 percent of total infections.
